Things that can trigger a mouth ulcer

  • The plaque bacteria can be a common trigger of mouth ulcer:
The plaque bacteria usually live on the teeth and comprises a host of other bacteria. Several conditions can cause oral mucosa to thin out or break. When this happens, the bacterial that make up the plaque bacteria will attack the mouth. Bacteria attack can lead to mouth ulcers.
  • Smoking
Mouth ulcers affect smokers more than non-smokers. Smoking causes not only mouth ulcers, but it also slows down the healing process. Smoking can lead to vitamin C depletion. Also, hot smoke can cause the mucosa to thin out or break.
  • Tiredness and stress
Stress can lead to immune system weakness, making you prone to different diseases. Mouth ulcers can also occur because of this. Mouth ulcers can also appear as a symptom of some diseases such as diabetes, coeliac disease, etc. These diseases affect the immune system negatively.
  • Mouth care products like toothpaste
Sodium Lauryl Sulphate added to mouth care products like toothpaste and mouth wash is often linked to mouth ulcers. Sodium Lauryl Sulphate can damage the mucosa both in the mouth and the intestine.
  • Excessive use of alcohol
Excessive use of alcohol can damage the mucosa, making it easy for bacteria to attack. Recurrent mouth ulcers might be an early sign of cancer. Therefore, it is important to see the doctor.
